I often have a hard time continuing a storyline or even starting one that actually keeps me invested in it, which then, more times than not, leads me to start a new one. I got inspired by a website I found that gives you short scenarios to help keep your stories interesting. This is the one I decided to try: Plot Twist Story Prompts: Uncharacteristic Character- Make one of your characters start acting out of character.
- Have the A-hole “bad guy” do something nice or endearing or have the “good guy” do something questionable.
- Or maybe your normally “reliable character” suddenly can't be counted on for anything!
- Think deeply about what's causing the change in behavior so it’s realistic.
- Is the character under a magic spell or the influence of a drug or maybe being blackmailed?
- Perhaps they're distracted by some event or news that the other characters don't know about.
- Maybe the uncharacteristic behavior is finally revealing who they've always been and have been hiding it for long a time.
- It coud be a momentary lapse in typical personality, a realistic dream, or a new phase of the character's overall development, having a character "act out of character" can help drive a story in fascinating new directions.
